Lorain Branding Presentation To Explore City’s Identity And Future Image

LORAIN — Lorain City Council is expected to hear a presentation next month on a branding effort that could help shape how the city presents itself moving forward.

Council received correspondence Monday from City of Lorain civil engineer Veronica Newsome requesting time before the Buildings & Lands Committee for a branding presentation. The agenda packet identifies Newsome as the submitter of the request but does not list a title or department.

According to the request, the presentation will review work completed so far, including community input, design themes and early visual concepts. The stated goal is to refine Lorain’s brand into something that reflects the city’s identity and future vision.

The item was referred to committee for a presentation scheduled June 8.

Looking At Lorain’s Past And Future

Lorain’s identity has changed over time.

For much of its history, Lorain was known as a manufacturing and industrial city, with steel production, shipping, rail, lake commerce and generations of working-class families helping shape the community.

Recent years have brought continued investment and attention toward the waterfront, Black River Landing, downtown activity, trails, recreation, small businesses, tourism and redevelopment efforts across the city.

The upcoming presentation could offer insight into how those pieces may fit together as Lorain considers how it wants to describe itself moving forward.

During committee calls Monday, Councilwoman-at-Large Mary Springowski asked that council members receive presentation materials ahead of time.

“If they could send me the packets of what they want to present that night prior to, I would appreciate that because I like to do my homework,” Springowski said.

No final action was taken Monday, and no branding concepts were presented during the meeting.

The June 8 presentation is expected to provide council with an early look at the work completed so far.

One question may end up driving much of that conversation is:

What should Lorain’s identity be?
