ELYRIA — One of Lorain County’s most recognizable commercial properties could be moving toward a new chapter.
The Lorain County Port Authority has entered into a purchase agreement to sell Midway Mall in Elyria to Industrial Realty Group, a national development company with experience in large-scale redevelopment projects across Northeast Ohio and the country.
The proposed sale is valued at $15.8 million, according to information released by the Lorain County Commissioners.
The 58-acre mall property is located near Interstate 90, state Route 57 and the Ohio Turnpike, making it one of the more strategically positioned redevelopment sites in Lorain County.
County officials said the agreement represents another step toward transforming the long-vacant property into a site that could support future economic growth, investment and community development.
Plans Still In Early Stages
Specific redevelopment plans for the Midway Mall property have not yet been finalized.
County officials said the process will include due diligence, financing, planning and future collaboration between local partners and developers.
The release said county and local leaders believe redevelopment of the site could create new commercial activity, encourage private investment and support possible residential and mixed-use development opportunities in Elyria.
Experienced Redevelopment Partner
Industrial Realty Group, often known as IRG, has been involved in several major redevelopment projects in Ohio.
The company’s work has included the Hall of Fame Village in Canton and redevelopment efforts connected to the former Goodyear headquarters campus in Akron.
County officials said finding a development partner with experience managing complex redevelopment projects and long-term investment initiatives was an important part of moving the property forward.
A Long-Awaited Step Forward
Midway Mall, like many malls across the country, has experienced years of decline as shopping habits changed and online retail expanded.
Rather than allowing the property to continue deteriorating, county leaders and the Port Authority have worked to position the site for future redevelopment.
The agreement does not mean changes will happen immediately, but officials said it marks important momentum for the property and reinforces broader efforts to strengthen economic development throughout Lorain County.
As redevelopment discussions continue, county officials said they remain optimistic about the future of the site and the opportunities it could create for residents, businesses and the surrounding community.
