Lorain City Schools Not Participating in New Ohio Attendance Dashboard

A new statewide tool designed to track student attendance in near real time has launched in Ohio, but Lorain City Schools are not currently participating in the system.

The dashboard, announced by the Ohio Department of Health in partnership with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, provides weekly updates on student attendance and chronic absenteeism for participating school districts across the state. The goal is to give parents, educators, and policymakers more immediate access to data that was previously released months after the school year ended.

According to state officials, the new system is intended to improve transparency and allow communities to identify attendance issues as they develop rather than after the fact. The dashboard allows users to search by district and individual schools, offering a more detailed and timely look at attendance trends.

Participation in the dashboard is voluntary, and not all districts are currently submitting data.

Lorain City Schools are among several large districts in Ohio that are not participating in the system at this time. Other major districts not listed in the dashboard include Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

It is not immediately clear why Lorain City Schools are not participating or whether the district plans to join the system in the future. No public statement addressing the decision had been released as of this report.

The absence of Lorain’s data is notable given the district’s previously reported attendance challenges. State data from prior reporting periods has shown that chronic absenteeism, typically defined as missing 10 percent or more of the school year, has been a significant issue in the district.

State officials have said the new dashboard is meant to support early intervention by providing schools and communities with up to date information. Without participation, that data is not available for Lorain through the new system.

At this time, the dashboard continues to expand as more districts opt in, but there is no requirement for districts to participate.

It is not known if or when Lorain City Schools will begin submitting attendance data to the state’s new tracking system.
