ELYRIA, Ohio — A 27-year-old Elyria man was arrested Friday morning after police said he fired multiple rounds, including shots toward an Elyria Police Department unmanned aircraft, during an early morning shooting investigation.
According to the Elyria Police Department, officers responded at approximately 4:27 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, to reports of gunfire in the area of the 700 block of Delaware Avenue. Police said officers were investigating an unrelated alarm when they heard multiple gunshots.
As officers arrived, they heard an additional volley of approximately 20 gunshots and established a perimeter around the scene. An Elyria Police Department unmanned aircraft was deployed to assist officers in locating the person responsible.
While conducting an aerial search, police said a suspect was observed in the backyard of a residence in the 700 block of Delaware Avenue. According to the department, the suspect fired additional rounds while in the backyard before turning and firing shots in the direction of the aircraft. Police said the incident occurred in a residential neighborhood with numerous occupied homes, and no officers or community members were injured.
Police identified the resident as Da’Vaun J. Grant, 27, of Elyria. According to the department, attempts to contact Grant by telephone and through public announcements were unsuccessful. At approximately 9:10 a.m., officers established contact with Grant and took him into custody without incident. Detectives also seized the firearm believed to have been used during the incident.
Police said Grant was interviewed by detectives and admitted to firing the weapon. He was transported to the Lorain County Jail pending an initial appearance in Elyria Municipal Court.
Lorain County Jail records show Grant has been charged with endangering aircraft and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle. His initial court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2026, in Elyria Municipal Court.
The investigation remains under the direction of the Elyria Police Department.
