Officers heard dozens of early-morning shots
ELYRIA — An Elyria man was arrested after allegedly firing numerous gunshots in a residential neighborhood, including several in the direction of a police drone.
Officers investigating an unrelated alarm heard multiple gunshots near Delaware Avenue at approximately 4:27 a.m. July 10, according to Elyria police.
As officers reached the 700 block of Delaware Avenue, they heard another volley of approximately 20 shots and established a perimeter around the area.
Police deployed a drone to help locate the person responsible. During the aerial search, officers reportedly saw a man firing additional rounds from the backyard of a residence.
The man then turned and fired in the direction of the drone, police said.
No officers or residents were injured despite the shooting occurring near numerous occupied homes.
Police identified the man as Da’Vaun Grant, 27, of Elyria. Officers attempted to reach Grant by telephone and through public announcements but initially received no response.
Officers eventually established contact with Grant, and he was taken into custody without incident at approximately 9:10 a.m.
Detectives recovered the firearm allegedly used during the shooting from the residence. Police said Grant admitted during an interview that he had fired the weapon.
Grant was transported to the Lorain County Jail. At the time of the July 10 police release, he was being held without bond pending his initial appearance in Elyria Municipal Court.
Police did not identify Grant’s specific charges in the release.
