Plaque recognizes support after officer’s death

Departments stood together following 2025 tragedy

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — The Lorain Police Department has recognized the North Ridgeville Police Department for its support following the line-of-duty death of Lorain Officer Phillip Wagner.

Lorain Officer Brent Payne recently presented North Ridgeville police with a plaque on behalf of his department, according to an Aug. 20 Facebook post from North Ridgeville police.

Wagner, a North Ridgeville resident, died July 24, 2025, after being wounded in an ambush the previous day. Payne and Officer Peter Gale also were wounded in the attack.

North Ridgeville police assisted the Lorain Police Department and members of the community during the days following Wagner’s death.

“While the plaque is greatly appreciated, it is the meaning behind it that means the most to us,” the department wrote. “Law enforcement is a brotherhood, and when one of our own is lost, we stand together.”

The department thanked Payne and the Lorain Police Department for the recognition and their continued partnership.

“We will always stand with you,” the post concluded.
