ELYRIA — A 32-year-old Elyria woman has been charged with aggravated burglary and using weapons while intoxicated following an early morning shooting on East Avenue that left her with a gunshot wound.
According to a press release from the Elyria Police Department, officers responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 4:56 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, at a residence in the 400 block of East Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Kierra Armstrong, 32, suffering from a grazing gunshot wound. Lifecare Ambulance and the Elyria Fire Department provided medical assistance at the scene, and Armstrong was transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.
Detectives interviewed two additional individuals involved in the incident — a 27-year-old woman who lives at the residence and a 24-year-old female visitor. A firearm believed to have been used in the incident was recovered at the scene. Both women were taken to the Elyria Police Department for further interviews.
The investigation revealed that Armstrong had already been involved in a disturbance at the same residence earlier that morning. At approximately 3:27 a.m., officers encountered Armstrong while responding to an unrelated matter in the area. Though she was reportedly involved in a disturbance, no crime was found to have occurred at that time, and officers transported her back to her home elsewhere in Elyria.
Police say that less than two hours later, Armstrong returned to the East Avenue home while intoxicated and armed with a handgun. She allegedly forced her way into the residence, prompting a physical altercation between her and the 27-year-old resident. During the struggle, the firearm discharged, striking Armstrong with what police described as a grazing wound.
While receiving treatment at the hospital, Armstrong was interviewed by detectives. Upon her release, she was taken into custody and booked into the Lorain County Jail at 4:18 p.m. the same day. She has been charged with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, and using weapons while intoxicated, a first-degree misdemeanor. Jail records list Armstrong as a maximum-security inmate. She is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in Elyria Municipal Court on Monday, May 5, at 9:00 a.m.
The Elyria Police Department noted that the investigation remains active and ongoing. The names of the other individuals involved are being withheld in accordance with state privacy laws.
