Lorain Driver Hits Pole, Crashes Into Creek, Cited for OVI

Lorain, Ohio — A Lorain man is facing multiple charges after crashing his vehicle into a creek early Thursday morning, leading to an OVI citation and a pending court date.

Officers responded shortly after 2:00 a.m. on May 8 to a report of a downed utility pole near Oak Point Road and West Erie Avenue. They discovered 32-year-old Robert Long, of Lorain, leaning against a guardrail in wet clothing. Long told police he had exited his vehicle after it became submerged in a nearby creek.

Investigators determined Long had been driving a 2013 blue Dodge Challenger when it veered off the road, struck a utility pole, traveled through a ditch, and came to rest about 150 feet away, fully submerged in the Beaver Creek inlet leading to Lake Erie.

Long refused all field sobriety tests and a breath test, leading officers to cite him for failure to control, operating a vehicle while impaired (OVI), and refusal of a breath test. He was transported to Mercy Health – Lorain Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police confirmed Long had a prior OVI conviction from 2024. He is scheduled to appear in Lorain Municipal Court on May 13 at 10:00 a.m.

The submerged vehicle was later recovered by the Lorain Police Underwater Recovery Team. It sustained heavy damage and significant water exposure.

Traffic control was managed by Lorain Police Auxiliary Officers with assistance from the Patrol Division and Recovery Team.
