ELYRIA, OH — May 9, 2025 — The Elyria Police Department announced the successful conclusion of Operation Genesis, a multi-week narcotics enforcement initiative that led to the arrest of 20 individuals and the seizure of significant quantities of illegal drugs and firearms.
The operation began on April 4 and concluded on May 7, 2025, targeting individuals involved in the distribution of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine within the city and surrounding areas. According to police, several arrests stemmed from ongoing investigations, while others were taken into custody for outstanding warrants and unrelated offenses.
Investigators from the Elyria Police Narcotics Unit, supported by the Detective Bureau, Neighborhood Impact Unit, Traffic Enforcement Unit, and Patrol Division, executed multiple arrest and search warrants during the effort. Their work led to the seizure of:
- 215 grams of fentanyl
- 79 grams of cocaine
- 10 grams of methamphetamine
- 4 firearms
- U.S. currency
“This operation is part of our department’s continued commitment to addressing the devastating impact of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs in our neighborhoods,” said Police Chief James P. Welsh. “We will not tolerate those who profit from addiction and misery.”
Chief Welsh also thanked community members for their ongoing cooperation: “Public safety is a partnership, and operations like this reinforce our mission to provide a safer Elyria for everyone.”
Mayor Kevin Brubaker echoed the department’s message. “The results of Operation Genesis send a clear message that we are united in the fight against illegal drugs. This is a victory for public safety and for the future of our city.”
Those arrested face a variety of charges including drug trafficking, drug possession, weapons offenses, and multiple bench warrants. Some cases remain under investigation, and additional charges or arrests may follow.
