LORAIN, OH — A large-scale law enforcement response unfolded Wednesday afternoon after shots were fired at officers in Lorain, leaving three officers injured and leading to the arrest of a suspect.
The incident occurred near Missouri Avenue and River Bend Drive. Police scanner traffic indicated that an individual armed with a rifle opened fire on responding officers. One officer sustained gunshot wounds to both the leg and arm but was reported to be awake and alert. The conditions of the two other injured officers have not been released.
Authorities quickly requested mutual aid from surrounding jurisdictions, including Elyria, Amherst, and Sheffield Village. All available units—including off-duty personnel—were called to respond. SWAT was activated, and multiple helicopters were dispatched to assist with medical transport and scene support.
At least three Metro Life Flight helicopters responded, and LifeCare deployed several ambulances. A drone was launched to assist in clearing the area, and the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called in to investigate the suspect’s vehicle.
The suspect was taken into custody, but law enforcement remained on high alert while clearing the area due to uncertainty over whether other individuals were involved. Roads in the area, including a portion of Colorado Avenue from Root Road to Kansas Avenue, were temporarily closed as part of the emergency response.
Police have not yet released the suspect’s identity or the motive behind the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and more information is expected to be made available in the coming days.
