LORAIN, OHIO — Lorain Police Officer Brent Payne has been released from Cleveland Metro Hospital and is now recovering at home after being critically injured during a July 23 ambush that shook the city’s law enforcement community.
Payne was transported by Life Flight from Mercy Health to Lorain to MetroHealth following the attack, which left him with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers from Lorain and surrounding agencies lined the hospital hallways Saturday to honor him as he was discharged. A police escort accompanied him home, where he will continue to heal surrounded by loved ones.
The Lorain Police Department acknowledged that the road to recovery will be long, but expressed pride and gratitude that Payne is back in the comfort of his home. Officer Gale, who was also injured in the same incident, is likewise said to be recovering.
“We extend our deepest appreciation to the dedicated medical teams, first responders, and all who played a pivotal role in saving these officers’ lives,” the department said in a statement.
Officials also offered heartfelt thanks to the community for the outpouring of support received in the days following the shooting. “While we are not out of the woods yet, your unwavering support has given us the strength and determination to move forward with the wind at our backs,” the release stated.
According to the Lorain Police Department, Officer Payne has requested that the media and public respect his privacy during his recovery
The investigation into the ambush remains ongoing.
