ELYRIA — City officials have secured more than $1.28 million in funding for a major sidewalk and pedestrian safety project along Burns Road and Abbey Road, an effort that comes after the death of a young boy in the area.

During a recent committee meeting, officials confirmed the project was pursued following the incident.
“the city unfortunately with the passing of the young boy on Burns Road, we did apply for some funding for the sidewalk enhancements and improvements over in the Burns Road Abbey Road area,” the city engineer said during the meeting.
The project has been awarded $1,282,275 through state-supported funding, with a 90/10 split that will require the city to cover a smaller portion of the total cost.
Plans for the project include installing sidewalks along Burns Road, improving pedestrian crossings, and expanding access for residents traveling through the area.
Officials said the improvements are designed to increase safety and better connect key parts of the community.
“the intent is to add sidewalks on Burns Road both sides… [and] provide connectivity to not only the schools but also the parks as well as jobs,” the engineer said.

In addition to sidewalks, the proposal includes extending a bike path near Lorain County Community College and improving overall pedestrian infrastructure throughout the corridor.
While the funding covers the majority of the project, officials noted additional costs could arise.
“we do anticipate there will probably be a little bit more money required… for some additional storm water work,” the engineer said.
City leaders also acknowledged that the issue has already drawn attention from residents.
“I had a lot of questions about this issue from the public,” one official said during the meeting.
The project is expected to move forward as an emergency measure, allowing the city to begin the process more quickly.
Further details, including final design plans and timelines, are expected to be presented to council at a later date.
