LORAIN — Lorain City Schools says graduation for the Class of 2026 has been rescheduled after city and school officials determined a change was needed to improve safety and police staffing for the ceremony.

The district announced the adjustment Monday, saying the decision was made in coordination with the City of Lorain and the Lorain Police Department to ensure stronger support for commencement at George Daniel Field.
School officials said the move followed “thoughtful and thorough consideration,” with a focus on maintaining the highest level of safety and support for students, families, and staff attending graduation.
“In the spirit of transparency, we want to share that this change followed thoughtful and thorough consideration, with a clear focus on ensuring the highest level of safety and support for the event,” the district said in its announcement.
Officials said aligning resources between the city and the school district will allow for a stronger police presence at the stadium while also ensuring Lorain officers can continue serving residents across the city.
“The Lorain Police Department remains committed to the safety of our students and families, and this decision was made after thorough consideration of the resources required to provide the highest level of support for the event,” a statement from the department reads. “Moving the event to this specific date and time allows our department to optimize our staffing levels across the city.”
Graduation had originally been scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, according to the district’s 2025-26 calendar draft, with rain dates set for Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28.
The updated schedule moves commencement to Saturday, May 23 at 10 a.m. at George Daniel Field, with a new rain date of Sunday, May 24.
The district acknowledged the late notice may affect family plans, especially with graduation being moved three days earlier and before the original post-Memorial Day schedule.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your flexibility as we work to prioritize a well-supported celebration for our graduates,” the district said.
Officials also reminded families that tickets will not be available for purchase at the stadium on the day of the event.
The district said graduation remains focused on honoring the accomplishments of the senior class and ensuring the celebration is safe, respectful, and memorable for students and their families.
