Walmart will begin rolling out tap-to-pay technology at select U.S. stores and Sam’s Club locations next week, giving shoppers another option for making purchases at checkout.
The retailer announced Friday that Tap to Pay will become available at select locations beginning Monday, Aug. 24. Walmart plans to expand the technology to all of its U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026.
The company also plans to bring tap-to-pay technology to its fuel stations by mid-2027.
“We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay,” Walmart said in announcing the rollout.
The new system will allow customers and Sam’s Club members to pay using eligible contactless credit or debit cards, phones and smartwatches.
Walmart said customers will also be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to digital wallets and use those cards through the new contactless payment system.

The addition does not replace Walmart’s existing payment options.
Customers will still be able to pay with cash, credit cards or Walmart Pay. Walmart Pay allows shoppers to use the Walmart app to make purchases, view transactions and receipts and access Walmart+ fuel savings.
Sam’s Club members will also continue to have access to Scan & Go, which allows members to scan merchandise and pay through the Sam’s Club app without going through a traditional checkout line.
Walmart said the tap-to-pay expansion is part of its effort to give shoppers more choices at checkout and make the purchasing process more convenient.
The company did not identify which Walmart or Sam’s Club locations will be included in the initial Aug. 24 rollout. Walmart said the technology is expected to reach all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of the year.
