Bond Reduced for 18-Year-Old Charged in Lorain, Sheffield Lake Shooting Investigation

LORAIN — Exzavier Carrion, 18, appeared virtually Friday in Lorain Municipal Court, where a judge reduced his bond in connection with a shooting investigation that spanned Sheffield Lake and Lorain.

Court records show Carrion was arraigned following a Dec. 18 incident in which police recovered more than three dozen shell casings outside homes along Garfield Boulevard in Lorain.

Charges Filed

Carrion faces three felony charges:

  • Improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle (discharge), a fourth-degree felony
  • Improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation or school, a second-degree felony
  • Carrying a concealed weapon (loaded firearm), a fourth-degree felony

He entered not guilty pleas to all counts. The case was formally bound over to a Lorain County grand jury on Dec. 26.

Investigation Details

According to police reports, a Sheffield Lake officer on patrol near Harris Road heard multiple gunshots around 2 a.m. Officers responding to the area later located numerous shell casings outside residences on Garfield Boulevard.

Investigators said a vehicle believed to be connected to the gunfire was later observed in Sheffield Lake near Lake Breeze Road. When the vehicle pulled into an apartment complex, several passengers fled on foot. Carrion, identified as the driver, was detained at the scene.

A supplemental report from the Lorain Police Department states Carrion told investigators he had been contacted through Instagram by an acquaintance asking for a ride. He said he picked up multiple individuals who were armed, but told police he did not drive them to the location where the shooting occurred.

Police reported recovering a ski mask, dark clothing, multiple handguns and an assault-style rifle from the vehicle. Investigators noted that shell casings connected to the case were recovered outside residences, not inside the vehicle.

Bond Reduction

Carrion’s bond was initially set at $250,000. During Friday’s hearing, his attorney cited his age, lack of prior criminal history and enrollment in college in requesting a reduction. Prosecutors opposed the request, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the number of firearms involved.

Judge Thomas J. Elwell Jr. ultimately reduced bond to $50,000 cash or surety, with GPS monitoring and court-supervised release conditions. Carrion is permitted to attend school and work.

Court records show bond was posted later that day, and Carrion was released from custody Friday afternoon.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Lorain Police Detective Bureau at 440-204-2105.
