Lorain County Sheriff’s Office Introduces First Mounted Unit Horse Since 1960s

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office has introduced its first mounted unit horse in decades, marking the return of a policing strategy not seen locally since the 1960s.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Jack M. Hall, who said the addition of the horse represents both a public safety upgrade and a renewed connection between deputies and the community.

According to the sheriff’s office, mounted units were once a regular part of operations when horses made up the sheriff’s posse. The reintroduction of a mounted horse is being described as a milestone for the agency.

Officials said the effort was made possible through community donations and support. The sheriff’s office thanked residents who contributed to bringing the mounted unit back.

“Our mounted unit is a direct reflection of the strong partnership we share with our community, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated to make this possible,” Hall said. “This horse will not only enhance our ability to ensure public safety at large events and in crowd management situations but it will also serve as a unique and approachable way for our deputies to connect with residents.”

The mounted unit is expected to be used for crowd control, search efforts, and high-visibility patrols. Deputies on horseback are able to see over large groups, which can help them assess situations more effectively. Law enforcement agencies have long used mounted units to promote calm and cooperation during large gatherings.

Officials also highlighted the role horses can play in community engagement, particularly during interactions with children and families.

At this time, the horse has not yet been named. The sheriff’s office said a name announcement will be shared with the public at a later date.

The agency said the addition of the mounted unit reflects its continued focus on public safety and strengthening relationships within the community.
