Emergency crews were called to a Lorain water facility early Friday afternoon following an on-site incident, according to city officials.

The Lorain Fire Department arrived at the Lorain Purification Plant at approximately 1:10 p.m. to assist with cleanup efforts after the situation was reported shortly before 1 p.m.
Officials with the City of Lorain said the incident occurred at approximately 12:55 p.m. and involved a chemical spill on-site. The substance was later identified as an estimated 200 gallons of sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda at a 50 percent concentration.

According to the city, the entire volume of the spill was contained and did not enter any stormwater drains or surrounding areas. Officials also noted the spill occurred away from the plant’s treatment process.
The city stated there was no impact to the water system and no risk to public health.
No additional details have been released at this time regarding the cause of the spill or whether any injuries were reported.
