Police urge families to protect privacy
As students return to classrooms, the Elyria Police Department is reminding families to look closely at what their first-day-of-school photos may reveal before posting them online.
The popular pictures often show children holding signs listing their names, ages, grades, teachers and schools. Although the information may appear harmless, combining those details can tell strangers where a child spends the day and provide clues about the child’s routine.
The department demonstrated the difference through two photos featuring an Elyria police officer. In one, the officer holds a simple “First Day of School” sign. In the other, the sign includes a name, date, grade, teacher and other personal information.

“Before you hit ‘post,’ take a quick look at what your photo might reveal,” the department advised families in a social media post.
Police recommend taking pictures in a private location and leaving names, school information and other personal details off signs. Families should also check the background for school signs, street signs, house numbers or other landmarks that could identify where a child lives or attends school.
Parents and guardians are advised not to share a child’s full name, age, grade, teacher, school, daily schedule or routine. Using a nickname or leaving the child’s name off the post entirely can provide another layer of privacy.
“That first-day-of-school picture is worth sharing, but their privacy is worth protecting, too,” the department said.
